The ABCs of Schools in Denver’s popular Highlands neighborhood

| Category: Denver, Uncategorized | March 21st, 2012

The Highlands neighborhood in Northwest Denver has become extremely popular with Denver urbanites over the last ten years.  As many have started families, schools have become a very important component to picking out a home within the neighborhood.  Here we’ve compiled a variety of information that will give you a taste of the schools from the comfort of your home.

Starting out with elementary schools in the Highlands neighborhood we have…

Beach Court: Known for it’s talented and dedicated teachers, this school has some of the top CSAP scores in Denver. Greatschools.org has given this public school an 8 out of 10 rating!

Edison Elementary:  This is a school that is dedicated to academic excellence and building a community. Principle Sally Whitelock says on their website, “We challenge our students every day with a rigorous curriculum, cooperative learning, and high academic expectations taught with a guaranteed and viable curriculum.” They even have a Learning Landscape with a community garden.

Brown International: One of the only elementary schools in Denver with a International Baccalaureate, or IB, program, this school goes above and beyond with it’s academics. They also encourage the students to get involved in the community, and apply what they learn in school to every day life.

Academia Ana Marie Sandoval:  Known for it’s dual-language learning, this Montessori school serves children from 3 years old through 6th grade. They pride themselves in having a high involvement rate from parents, staff, and the local community.

Valdez: This is another dual-language school that focuses on teaching their students to be both bilingual and bi-literate in Spanish and English, making them well-rounded in our diverse society. They are also considering building a dual-language middle school for Northwest Denver.

Moving on to Middle Schools, we have:

Skinner Middle School: This historical school was built in 1922, and has kept the same “academic rich” standards for the past 75 years. As the school’s website says, Skinner “aims to keep students in school by offering an enriched curriculum in order to meet the diverse needs of adolescents.”

West Denver Preparatory:  With the closing of Lake Middle School, students can turn to West Denver Prep for a better future. This charter school offers four different campuses, and focuses on preparing their students for college. The website quotes, “Our curriculum is intensive, with a strong focus on skill development, especially in the areas of literacy (150 minutes daily) and mathematics (110 minutes daily).”

Lastly, we have the only high school in the area…

North High School: Principal Nicole Veltzè says, “We focus on each and every child to ensure college and career readiness. We have an array of academic programs to fit the needs of all the students in our neighborhood.” They are also one of the few schools that offers Junior ROTC! There are plenty of homes for sale in this area as well.

A few interesting points are that there are a lot of practical homes that are being viewed frequently on the website.  Oftentimes the most viewed homes on COhomefinder.com are luxury dream homes.  Currently the 5 most viewed homes on COhomefinder.com are in price ranges that are typical of first time home buyers.  Interesting things are happening in with Colorado real estate as inventory levels in some markets are shrinking. A Primer on Washington Park Area Public Schools

| Category: Denver, Uncategorized | January 11th, 2012

Widely recognized today as one of the best urban school systems in the country, Denver Public Schools (DPS) serves the residents of the City and County of Denver, Colorado. Living in the Washington Park neighborhood means students have access to many quality educational institutions. As the academic year approaches and local schools start gearing up for the semester ahead, each is looking to either increase or sustain their enrollment. However, being in such a dense, urban area it can sometimes be confusing as to which schools are public, private, or offer some kind alternative education. Hopefully, this breif article can shake any anxiety current and future Washington Park residents may harbor about area schools.

Located just south of Wash Park on Franklin and Louisiana sits South High School. The impressive Romanesque edifice has enjoyed a long history. The school was brought to life in 1924 with a price tag of over one million dollars – no small sum in the early ‘20s. In 1992 the school was designated a national historic landmark. Today, visitors can stroll the grounds after hours and see the gorgeous craftsmanship up close. Notable alumni include experimental filmmaker Stan Brakhage and State Representative Diana DeGette.

South High offers a wide and varied selection of courses along with dedicated counselors, teachers and staff to support students. “South” as it’s known, is a national AVID demonstration school. AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination and prepares students for college. Along with the AVID Program, South also offers advanced placement courses and JROTC.

Apart from impressive academic offerings are the athletic opportunities, various clubs and students activities. Active students will find plenty to keep them busy with swimming, tennis, lacrosse, cheerleading, golf, football, wrestling, soccer and more. With over forty clubs, ranging from Model United Nations to mountaineering club, to the classics like band and orchestra, there truly is something for everyone. South’s new principal, Kristen Waters, states how the High School will “prepare all students for college and post-secondary career opportunities, ensuring that they have the tools and resources needed to be successful once they graduate.”  Read her letter detailing how South High School will prepare tomorrow’s leaders here.

Wash Park residents eagerly await the reopening of the former Byers Middle School (originally named for the same William Byers, as the Byers-Evans House Museum). The school, originally closed due to low-enrollment, will reopen as a Denver School of Science and Technology (DSST). So what is DSST and what does it mean for the West Washington Park neighborhood? In 2001 DSST was granted a charter status by Denver Public Schools to open a school in the Stapleton area. Their goal was simple: to provide an environment that would allow all students to excel at the state standards in math, science, and English skills. Since their induction, DSST has repeatedly produced some of the highest scores in statewide testing. DSST’s curriculum and environment also works to install a sense of civic pride in their students – something that should benefit the whole community in the long run.

The Denver Public School system has several prominent elementary schools in the area. Steele Elementary, home of the Stallions, is one of the schools participating in Seed to Table - a program sponsored by Slow Food Denver. Seed to Table aims to teach children about the holistic production process (from the farm to our table), as well as the nutritive value of the food they eat. Starting from how it grows, to how it is prepared, and finally of the plethora of benefits from eating healthy, naturally grown food. For the past 11 years the Steele School Gardens have been providing the Steele cafeteria with hundreds of pounds of fresh produce to serve to students – most of it grown adjacent to the school building!

Like Steel Elementary, Lincoln Elementary, another Washington Park primary school, offers the Kaleidoscope Program. Kaleidoscope is a beneficial before and after school program for students designed to meet the needs of families with working parents. The program offers educational, recreational and cultural resources for students to enrich their academic experience.

As you can see, wonderful educational opportunities await your child in the schools of Washington Park. Visit the Denver Public Schools website for up-to-date news and information regarding registration, open houses, events, school closures and more at any of the schools listed above, or others in the Denver area at large!
